STFC spin out company, Oxsensis Ltd, celebrates double success

Issue date: 12th February 2010

Oxsensis, the company developing some of the world's most advanced engine monitoring instruments to make a step-change in the efficiency of cars, planes and power stations,  is celebrating double success after winning two significant investment awards.

A spin out company from STFC's Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), Oxsensis has led a three way consortium with partners Rolls-Royce and Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery Ltd, to win major UK support for FRETSGATE, a £1.2m instrumentation project.

FRETSGATE is one of the ten major collaborative research and development projects aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from large single point sources, announced under the Carbon Abatement programme of the Technology Strategy Board (TSB), with the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and the Northern Way partnership.

Oxsensis has also been awarded a feasibility study award by the Technology Strategy Board for vibration sensors aimed at health monitoring for gas turbine systems.

Dr Tim Bestwick, Director of Innovations at STFC said: “I’m thrilled for Oxsensis in winning these two significant awards.  We have seen Oxsensis grow from what began as a research project to a company that is now leading an important consortium winning technology grants. At STFC we completely welcome such positive interaction between Oxsensis and the TSB and are absolutely committed to using both our facilities and expertise to support and develop innovative companies like Oxsensis. I’d like to offer them my congratulations.”
